Jazz from the Gila

GMCR and KURU were proud to announce the newest live DJ to join our ranks back in July 2014- the great tenor saxophonist John Tank who launched Jazz from the Gila.
When John is back in New York City, his spot will be held down by Dale Steele and George Carr, both lovers of jazz and they both have been learning a tremendous amount more from John.

John Tank has long been based in New York but lucky for us he also spends time in our little neck of the woods.  He continues to tour the US, Canada, England and the continent and has performed live on BBC Radio, the French National Radio, CBC Radio Canada and Dutch television in the Netherlands.

His pedigree is extensive and includes tenures with the great Charles Mingus on the recordings Me, Myself And Eye and Something Like A Bird as well as stints with Sam Rivers, Paul Jeffery, George Coleman, Joe Morello, John Blair, Jack Walrath, Calvin Hill, and many others – including our own Bayou Seco.  Some of his stylistic influences are Paul Desmond, Lester Young, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon and Zoot Sims.

As you can see, he’s a true Jazz Man from the old school and we look forward to his return to the station and the community.  His website is johntank.com
