This week’s installment of Use Your Words! is a brief introduction of the works of Juan Felipe Herrera, Poet Laureate of the United States and a forward to his coming appearance at WNMU.
Mr Herrera has been a teacher, performance artist and activist on behalf of indigenous and migrant communities and at-risk youth. He served as California’s Poet Laureate from 2012-2014 and has been the Poet Laureate of the United States since 2015. His poetry collections include Half the World in Light: New and Selected Poems, which won the PEN/Beyond Margins Award and National Book Critics Circle Award, Notes on the Assemblage, 187 Reasons Mexicanos Can’t Cross the Border: Undocuments 1971-2007.
He has also written young adult books, Cinnamon Girl: Letters Found Inside a Cereal Box and Crashboomlove and children’s books: Upside Down Boy and Calling the Doves, which speaks about his childhood as the son of migrant farm workers in California. And this is only a partial list of his work.
He will appear at Light Hall on WNMU campus on Monday, November 21st. Conversation on the patio will begin at 5:30 pm and his talk will commence at 6:30. Tickets are free, but must be picked up at Hunter Hall on campus from 8:30 am – Noon or 1 – 4pm.
