Community Spotlight: Farmers Market GMCR KURU 89.1 FM
Upper Gila Watershed Alliance Executive Director and Earth Matters Co-producer Donna Stevens talks about the Chino Closure/Closeout Plan and other hardrock mining issues with Allyson Siwik, Executive Director of the Silver City-based Gila Resources Information Project and Earth Matters co-producer.
Although copper mining plays a big role in the economy of Grant County, mining operations contaminate surface and groundwater, impair air quality and pollute our environment, affecting our health and quality of life.
We have an opportunity to speak up on behalf of our land, air, water and communities at a public hearing on the Chino Mine Closure/Closeout Plan scheduled for Wednesday July 24 at 4:30 at the Grant County Administration Building. The Closure/Closeout Plan outlines how Freeport-McMoRan will cleanup and reclaim the Chino mine once it is no longer in operation. Donna and Allyson also discuss 1872 Mining Law reform and other mining issues affecting southwest New Mexico.
Earth Matters is broadcast
