Earth Matters co-producer and Gila Resources Information Project Executive Director, Allyson Siwik, talks to Tina Cordova, co-founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium and Joni Arends, Executive Director or Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, about the legacy of the US nuclear weapons program in New Mexico on the 75th anniversary of the Trinity Test and bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We’ll be exploring the questions: is New Mexico the nation’s nuclear sacrifice zone and how can our country take responsibility for the devastating human toll caused by its nuclear testing?

On July 16, 1945, the United States detonated the first atom bomb over the southern New Mexico desert northeast of Truth or Consequences.  Weeks later at the end of the Second World War, our country dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, killing hundreds of thousands of people.
