In this week’s edition of Earth Matters Nathan Newcomer interviews Judy Calman – staff attorney for New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.  They discuss her work on the Department of Justice’s “McKittrick Policy” under which the DoJ has essentially refused to prosecute those that have shot and killed wolves or other endangered species.  In a first for the Wilderness Alliance, the are bringing suit – along with Wild Earth Guardians – against the DoJ for failing to prosecute these criminal acts.

They also discuss other issues within New Mexico including the woefully inadequate recognition of vast tracts of land havingwilderness characteristics” in the recent BLM Tri-County Management Plan for Otero, Sierra, and Dona Ana Counties, as well as the statewide Pit Rule that protects New Mexico’s groundwater form oil and gas waste pits.

Judy Calman moved to New Mexico in 2001, inspired by a life-long fascination with the West.  After completing degrees in Biology and Philosophy and working on several political campaigns, she realized her true passion to be environmental policy. She completed her law degree at the University of New Mexico, as well as a Masters in Environmental Law and Policy at the Vermont Law School.
