This week’s Back to the Garden show #24 is an interview with Doug Smith, owner of Townside Farm, just north of Silver City, actually just 2 miles from downtown. It is an organic-method operation, with vegetables, a large, all-solar greenhouse, fruit trees and berry hedges! Doug and the farm welcome volunteers - which my partner and I were for part of last summer, one morning a week, where we had a wonderful time! And the farm is about to undergo some big, positive changes, as Doug takes off to get his Permaculture Design Certification in April and returns to implement water-saving and natural shade-producing design changes! He also shares his favorite plant varieties.

Earth Matters continues its coverage of the 2014 NM Legislature with host Allyson Siwik in Santa Fe once again to interview NM State Senator Howie Morales, Molly Brook of Conservation Voters of NM, Dan Lormer, lobbbyist for the Sierra Club and last but not least our local chapter of NM Wild Friends from Guadalupe Montessori School here in Silver City who traveled to the Round House to testify in support of Senator Morales’ memorial opposing trophy poaching.

SB 89 - introduced by Senator Peter Wirth and cosponsored by Senator Morales - would required that available AWSA monies be allocated for non-diversion projects along the Gila River and is scheduled for the Conservation Committee while a slew of bills have been introduced by an array of latter day Sagebrush Rebellionists promoting the surrender of US public lands to the state of New Mexico which could then exploit and develop them in keeping with a pro-corporate agenda.

Earth Matters / 2014 NM Legislature - Week 3

Welcome to Earth Matters. Nathan Newcomer is your host this week and he attended the recent public meeting regarding the proposed Organ Mountains / Desert Peaks National Monument.

The meeting took place in Las Cruces, NM and the organizers were US Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich who were joined by US Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and a range of stakeholders in a town hall style meeting that included comments from the overflow audience. A clear majority strongly favored the expanded protection of areas surrounding the Organ Mountains while US Representative Steve Pearce and his supporters claimed support for a much smaller monument designation.

Beneath their claims of support for a truncated monument designation was a strong and clear aversion to a potential executive order that would preempt Congressional obstructionists who have refused repeatedly to act on the proposed monument as they have routinely on almost all legislation that challenges a pro-corporate / pro-development agenda.

Dr. Iya Kahn

Dr. Iya Kahn is widely known around town for energizing audiences, singing and playing clean, jazzy/bluesy guitar riffs over his pre-recorded - his own original - tracks of classic rock and blues favorites.

This Thursday evening, though, Iya unplugs from that marvelous machinery and just brings his acoustic guitar to share with us some of his original music! Looking forward to visiting and talking music with this dynamic man of Soul, Dr. Iya Kahn.

In the second hour, we’ll get to know a fairly new arrival in town: Tom “Houndog” Romancik. From northern New Mexico, Taos most recently, Tom played a couple of sets we caught at Yankie Creek Coffee House where he inspired numerous ovations with his original rock and blues.

Looking forward to both these guests, both dynamic performers.

Well folks, that was a fun show this morning - lots of love songs in the 9 to 10 segment. We are working on getting more music put into our archives. It’s a bit of work but it works. Our live tunes in the second segment were, as usual, off the cuff and a blast. Just like the old radio days when bands played on radio shows. Some of them were quite early in the morning, like 5 AM. We did one of those in Louisiana in 1979. We were playing with Beausoleil at the time and Mike Doucet and Jeanie and I went on an early farm show and played some tunes for the folks getting up early in the morning take care of their chores and getting ready to go to work. The first tune we played this morning is from O’Neil’s collection of Irish music - Dermot My Treasure. The second live song was a rare recording of Freddie King - What About Love. The third song was written by Kyle, with us here at the station, and is called ‘Ready to Receive’. He sang it with feeling as his sweetheart was there shooting love at him.

Here is a possibility to support the show and the station, we are putting together a list of things and equipment we need and maybe some folks out there could sponsor some of those. One great help would be an old four wheel drive vehicle to get us up to the tower.

Tonight on “Silver City Acoustic,” host Greg Renfro will have as his first guest: probably our most elder working musician in Silver City, Dane Dexter, who’ll share his musical life with us, including his 14 years in the 40s and 50s touring as a trumpeter for the black vocal group, The Ink Spots, whose music led to both rhythm and blues and rock and roll; arranging 150 pieces of big band music for Ina Ray Hutton’s all-female jazz-band television show; his living next door to Miles Davis, and much more - including live 30s, 40s and 50s jazz piano - accompanied by Edie Steede - in our beautiful downtown studios - tonight right after the 6 pm community calendar!

In our second hour, Edie Steede, our local, most-amazing jazz vocalist, will share about her growing up in St. Louis, developing her skills, her love for the old jazz standards, rock, and other music, and leading the Silver Blue Roots band here in Silver City. She’ll be accompanied by Dane on piano, as they perform together almost every week in Silver City.
