Jamie Newton

Jamie Newton is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at San Francisco State University, where for 31 years he taught courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in social psychology, social conflict and conflict resolution, research methods, and related topics. Throughout his life, Jamie has been active in community organizing for peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability, with an emphasis on training grassroots activists for nonviolent social change.

Jamie grew up near Glendale, Arizona, in what was then a rural area. After completing elementary and high school in the Glendale public schools, he earned his B.A. degree summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1968, and his Ph.D. degree from Stanford University in 1977. He spent four years between college and graduate school as an activist and staff member of the American Friends Service Committee’s Peace Education Program, working for peace and social justice during the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. He founded and coordinated a nonviolent action/training program for community action groups, and he was instrumental in organizing grassroots campaigns that included protest and advocacy demonstrations. As Vice-President of the Pentagon Papers Fund for the Defense of Human Rights, he helped to coordinate support for the legal defense of Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo in 1971-72.

Jamie lives in the Mimbres Valley with his wife, Marion. He is the originator and host of Civil Discourse, a public affairs production of Gila / Mimbres Community Radio.
