GMCR Media Advisory
Gila / Mimbres Community Radio is proud and delighted to announce that we have been granted a Construction Permit by the FCC / Federal Communications Commission for a Full Power Non-Commercial / Educational FM station to be located in Silver City, NM. As our name implies, we will serve not only Silver City but a larger audience of over 30,000 listeners throughout Grant County from Gila and parts NW to the communities of Mimbres, Faywood, the Burros and approaching Deming and Lordsburg.
The grant of the construction permit culminates a nearly 6 year period of hard work and
unwavering commitment to provide a locally governed, non-profit, non-commercial, listener supported, volunteer operated and community oriented radio station with particular emphasis on the large segments of our community that are underserved by conventional, mainstream and commercial media.
GMCR will provide a range of arts, culture, entertainment, educational and public affairs and Spanish language programming, as well as give voice to local residents and organizations and encourage the creation of programs by local residents consistent with our mission and values. Programs will cover a variety of interests including music, the arts, culture, science, spirituality, the environment, economics, entertainment, and media literacy.
The Construction Permit covers a period of three years within which GMCR must become fully operational and begin broadcasting. Fundraising plans are underway and a series of events will be announced in the near future.
Community members can become part of the effort at various levels of involvement and are encouraged to contact us. Those who wish to produce or host programs, DJ or otherwise become involved in content creation should also contact us, though with an awareness that we will likely hit the airwaves in 18-24 months.
We also encourage those interested to email us with suggestions for call letters and slogans to accompany them. Visit the website for a list of available call letters.
To celebrate the fruits of our efforts, we invite the community to attend our next board meeting on Tuesday 8 February 2011 from 5-7pm at Javalina on Bullard and Broadway in Silver City which will provide an opportunity to give more information on our vision and planning and allow us to hear your suggestions and answer your questions.
