Welcome to our special coverage of the
Silver Consolidated Schools Special Board Meeting
of Thursday 26 May 2016.

The last few weeks have produced a dizzying sequence of unexpected – and seemingly explainable – events culminating with the dispatch of Lon Streib as Superintendent under a $60,000 contract buyout agreement and the appointment of John Carter as the Acting Superintendent.  The agenda is available from the SCS website.

Many questions remain unanswered but a rough sequence of events includes

  • Lon Streib ordering crony Beth Lougee – Silver Principal – and Assistant Principal Victor Oaxaca to not “offer these sports increments for the 2016-17 school year.”
  • Lougee and Oaxaca’s refusal to do so
  • Streib placing both on Administrative Leave
  • 17 additional coaches publishing a public letter demanding reinstatement of the 3 coaches and suggesting their resignations would follow if the demands were not met
  • SCS Board Vice Chair Tony Egan announcing that Streib would vacate his position as of Friday 27 May and that “the settlement is friendly.”

Further, per the Silver Schools website

The Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education will hold a Budget Informative Session in the in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 2810 North Swan Street, Silver City, New Mexico, at 5:00 p.m. on TuesdayMay 31, 2016.

The purpose of the meeting will be to allow the Board an opportunity for general discussion and review of pertinent matters relating to the District budget.  If you need an accommodation to attend and participate in this meeting, call the Superintendent’s Office at 956-2000.

Many residents are expected to picket this meeting at the Silver Schools administration building beginning at 4:30 pm and circulate two petition documents.  One of these was circulated at the May 26th meeting and is, in essence, an informal “Vote of No Confidence” and the second petition is understood to be a formal recall petition calling for the removal from office of board members Arnold Torres, Tony Egan and Chris Arvidson.
