What is light pollution?  How does it negatively impact our lives?

Earth Matters co-producer and NM Wild regional director and staff scientist, Dr Kim McCreery, interviews Kathy Anderson, founder of the Silver City Astronomical Society and leading advocate for protecting night skies.  They discuss the scientific evidence linking artificial night light to disrupting the internal biological clocks of animals and plants, and the unintended consequences.

Birds by the millions are killed, scores of sea turtle hatchlings die, and human health is seriously compromised by something so seemingly innocuous—artificial night light.

In 2007, the World Health Organization declared night shift work a probable carcinogen.  In 2009, the American Medical Association announced that light pollution is a public hazard. Tune in to listen to this informative discussion and find out what makes the night skies of the wild Gila so special. Learn what you can do about light pollution in your own backyard.
