There are 624 positive cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico, with 12 deaths in the state according to the NM Dept. of Health.  45 individuals have been hospitalized in the state for the virus and 130 have been designated as recovered. [press release]

Grant County currently has 1 positive case of coronavirus reported by the New Mexico Department of Health. However, the Silver City Daily Press reported on Sunday three positive cases of COVID-19 among workers at the Chino mine. Visit scdailypress.com for more information. [Virus spreads at Chino mine]

The Department of Health reports that given the infectious nature of the virus it is likely other residents are infected but yet to be tested or confirmed positive. To that end, all New Mexicans have been instructed to stay home except for outings absolutely necessary for health, safety and welfare.   More information at cv.nmhealth.org

CDC GUIDANCE ON FACE MASKS

Because of the spread of coronavirus from people who have the virus but are not exhibiting symptoms, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its guidance on the use of face masks. The federal agency recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as  grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus.  CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.  Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators.  Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

Find out more about the CDC’s guidance and resources to make your own face mask at the coronavirus update resource page at gmcr.org/coronavirus-resources

On Friday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham extended the stay-at-home order through April. More information at cv.nmhealth.org

SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

New Mexico small businesses in financial distress due to the coronavirus crisis are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for loans made available under the federal stimulus bill.

The stimulus bill, or CARES Act, allocates $369 billion for loans to small businesses. But businesses only have until June 30 to access the money, and loans will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There are two loan programs for small businesses under the stimulus bill: the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program and the Paycheck Protection Program.

Under the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program, a small business can borrow up to $2 million, with an immediate grant advance up to $10,000 that can be distributed in three days to a business.

Small businesses can apply for the loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/

Applications also can be made through the SBA’s Small Business Development Centers. There are 19 centers in New Mexico, and they offer instruction and guidance on how to apply for the loans. The website for the centers is www.nmsbdc.org

Under the Paycheck Protection Program, a small business can borrow up to $10 million, with an interest rate of 1 percent. The loan is deferrable for six months.

The SBA will forgive Paycheck Protection Program loans if all employees are kept on the payroll for eight weeks and the money is used for payroll, rent, mortgage interest or utilities. A small business must work through its lender to apply for a loan. For more information, go to www.sba.gov/paycheckprotection.

For a list of Grant County banks participating in the Paycheck Protection Program, visit the Coronavirus update resource page at gmcr.org/coronavirus-resources

In addition to the loans made available under the stimulus bill, the New Mexico Economic Development Department also has created loan-guarantee and no-interest loan programs for businesses. For more information, go to https://gonm.biz/
