On this week’s Coronavirus Update, Jamie Newton interviews Dr. Fred Fox, MD, a family and public health physician who has lived in Grant County, New Mexico, for 33 years. He has practiced medicine here, and for the past 17 years he has been the Medical Director of the Health Department in Greenlee County, Arizona – just across the state line from Grant County. In that position, he has major responsibility for coordinating health care and prevention planning in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The program explores the state of the pandemic in this time of reopening, relaxation of restrictions, and rapidly spreading new and more infectious variants of the virus. Topics include:

  •         Current realities of the coronavirus, including the implications of the surging new Delta variant;
  •         Guidance for self-care, and care of families and the community, as New Mexico and the nation re-open;
  •         Herd immunity: What does it really mean, and can we get there?
  •         Vaccination hesitancy and refusal by large sectors of the population, vulnerabilities of unvaccinated adults and children, and susceptibility            to infection of immune-compromised people who are exposed to unvaccinated people.
  •         The continuing need for consistent coronavirus-safe practices, or “CSPs;”
  •         New information on “long COVID,” or long-term health impacts of the coronavirus.
