COVID-19 MODELING FOR NM AVAILABLE ON NEW MICRO-SITE

The State of New Mexico has a new COVID-19 modeling microsite available to the public. Modeling is a tool to assist health policy development and disease prevention and control. In NM, COVID-19 modeling helps in planning the State’s response to COVID-19 by attempting to predict the impact of COVID-19 on health systems and populations. However, models are just one tool and should not be considered in isolation from data and lived experiences in the field.

The modeling report for this week concludes that Improvements in reduction in COVID in NM has plateaued; The NW area of the state is seeing continued growth in cases. Bernalillo County has seen degradation in mitigation – the effective rate of transmission has increased in the past week requiring attention. Additional actions will be required to reduce transmission of COVID.

For the southwest region of the state that includes Grant County, COVID-19 transmission is only partially mitigated and in need of further actions to prevent large scale spread.

The 20-day forecasting shows that the southwest corner of the state is at increased risk for spread from adjacent communities in Arizona.

The report dramatically shows the effectiveness of social distancing measures to flatten the curve of the spread of COVID-19.

The modeling will be used to inform the State on its reopening plans.
