Earth Matters: NM Recycling Coalition & Silver City Recycles

today20 April 2021

This week on Earth Matters, GRIP Executive Director and Earth Matters co-producer Allyson Siwik talks to Sarah Pierpont, Executive Director of the NM Recycling Coalition and Chris Lemme, President of Silver City Recycles about what is being done here in the US, in NM and Grant County to address the serious problem of waste.

One of the major problems confronting our global environment is the production and management of waste. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the US generated 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018 or 4.9 pounds per person per day– That’s not counting the industrial wastes, construction debris and municipal wastewater sludge that is produced every year.

Plastics in particular are ubiquitous in our environment, causing impacts to wildlife and ecosystems. And at every step in the life cycle, plastics disproportionately harm communities of color, low-income communities and Indigenous communities by polluting the air, water, and soil. The U.S. generates the most plastic per capita of any country.
