On 11 March 2013 the Grant County Commission met to approve a resolution supporting the “Deming Diversion Plan” for the Gila River – which would pipe water from the Gila River to Silver City, Deming, Las Cruces and apparently to Texas ultimately, to atone for decades of profligate water misuse and mismanagement in the Lower Rio Grand and more particularly in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and other monuments to ill advised over development such as Las Cruces, the latest in a string of wannabe Phoenix, AZs.
The resolution is here.
Somehow, the Commission believes that this will avert the threat of usurpation of the waters of the Gila by the legislature, Interstate Stream Commission, Lower Rio Grand water rights stakeholders, the State of Texas and the Interior Department – so long as the Deming Diversion Plan is rewritten to suit the scenario they have in mind.
Public Input was not on the agenda but they apparently backtracked on that as the barbarians were right there at the gates.
This is not what democracy looks like, but it was what the Grant County Commission looked like today.
