This week on Today’s Healthy CommunityRebekka VanNess interviews Dr Molly Faulkner and Dr Bob Phillips on the opioid epidemic, and the need to educate high school and college students on career opportunities in mental and behavioral health fields.

Dr Molly Faulkner is an Assistant Professor, Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Social Worker in the Division of Community Behavioral Health at the University of New Mexico Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr Faulkner serves as the Clinical Director of the State Behavioral Health Workforce Initiative, Coordinator for Developmental Disability Mental Illness Consultation Clinics and provides psychiatric and clinical social work services to children and adolescents and adults with mental illness and intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Dr Faulkner’s career as a registered nurse, clinical social worker, nurse practitioner and doctorate spans 36 years. She received her BSN at the University of Oklahoma, her MSW at New Mexico Highlands University and her MSN and PhD in nursing at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Bob Phillips is a terrestrial from Roswell, New Mexico and is Coordinator of Human Services and Addiction Studies at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. With 35 years of experience, Bob serves as clinician, educator, trainer, and consultant in the fields of addictions treatment and the integration of behavioral health into primary medical care.

Bob’s research and clinical interests include program evaluation, youth risk and resiliency, and occupational health including risk and protective factors for burnout and compassion fatigue. In addition, he has served and led the human service professions at local, state, and national levels and organizations, including the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (Southwest Regional Vice-President 1995-1997); the New Mexico Addictions Education Network; the International Coalition of Substance Abuse Educators; and the International Association of Doctors of Behavioral Health.
