Earth Matters co-producer and Gila Resources Information Project Executive Director Allyson Siwik talks about critical New Mexico water resource issues with Doug Meiklejohn, attorney, Executive Director and founder of the NM Environmental Law Center, a non-profit, public interest law firm that provides free and low-cost legal services on environmental matters throughout New Mexico.

New Mexico’s water supplies are under attack.  The Martinez Administration’s copper rule allows copper mining companies to pollute groundwater at mine sites – a violation of the state’s Water Quality Act.  Water speculators are chomping at the bit to take water from rural areas and pipe it to populated urban areas.  How are communities pushing back on these powerful forces to protect their water resources from contamination and to prevent impairment of rural water supplies?
