Senator Martin Heinrich (Democrat of New Mexico) was Jamie Newton’s guest on Civil Discourse, in an interview recorded on December 1, 2021. The program focused on legislation introduced by Senator Heinrich to protect wildlife and public lands in the United States, to simplify access to outdoor areas, and to protect the Gila as a wild and scenic river. Legislation covered in the interview includes:

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, co-sponsored with Senator Roy Blunt (Republican of Missouri).

The Simplifying Outdoor Access for Recreation (SOAR) Act, co-sponsored with Senator Shelley Moore Capito (Republican of West Virginia).

The M.H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild & Scenic River Act, co-sponsored with Senator Ben Ray Luján (Democrat of New Mexico).

Jamie asked Senator Heinrich how members of the public can most effectively participate in the legislative process, helping to promote policies and legislation for goals of importance to them. The interview concludes with the Senator’s reflections on his approach to conducting the people’s business in a context of national and global crises, and achieving bipartisan cooperation on legislation despite severe antagonism between the Democratic and Republican parties.
