This week Gender Trouble will host Katherine Gauer, Luz Elena Carbajal, and Lydia Huerta of Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services, known locally as SASS.

• Counseling

• Medical and Legal accompaniment
• Public education and outreach
• Assistance with emergency housing, food, or transportation

Statistics show that approximately 1 in 5 women will be raped at some point in their lives, and that more than 40% of women have reported sexual violence other than rape. Men are not exempt; one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives, and more than 20% of men will report sexual violence some time in their lives (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).

Often sexual abuse and violence toward women go unreported. An accurate and often used figure is that approximately 1/3 of women have experience sexual and/or physical violence and approximately 1/6 of men have experience sexual and/or physical violence.
